Patna: The Bihar government on Wednesday (September 30, 2026) transferred retired IAS officer Deepak Kumar (Retd IAS:1984:BH) from the post of Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and appointed him as Vice-Chairman, Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA).
Kumar had been serving as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister since March 1, 2021, having taken charge a day after his retirement as Chief Secretary of Bihar on February 28, 2021. His transfer marks his exit from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat after more than five years.
He had earlier served as Chief Secretary of Bihar from June 2018 to February 2021. Following his retirement, he was appointed Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and continued in the position thereafter.
As Vice-Chairman of the BSDMA, Kumar will be part of the state’s institutional framework for disaster management. The Chief Minister of Bihar is the ex-officio Chairperson of the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority.
The move comes after Nitish Kumar’s departure from the Chief Minister’s post earlier this year, following which there had been speculation in administrative circles about Deepak Kumar’s continuation in the CMO. His transfer now formally brings his long stint in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to an end.
