With the two-year tenure of incumbent Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar ending in December 2026, discussions have begun within the Bihar bureaucracy regarding the potential names of senior IPS officers who will take charge as the head of the state police.
According to sources, the names of three senior IPS officers, from the 1993 and 1994 batches, are currently emerging as top contenders. Though the final decision rests with the government, the names of Kundan Krishnan (IPS:1994:BH), Jitendra Kumar (IPS:1993:BH), and Amit Kumar (IPS:1994:BH) are being prominently discussed in the bureaucratic circles.
Kundan Krishnan, currently posted as DGP (STF), has a long experience in the Bihar Police and has held important positions such as ADG (Headquarters) and ADG (Operations) at the Bihar Police Headquarters.
Having worked at headquarters and in operational roles, his understanding of the state’s police system is considered crucial. It remains to be seen how much influence this experience will have on the selection process.
Due to his long experience in police administration and operational level, his name is being prominently taken among the potential contenders.
Another prominent name in circulation for the post is that of Amit Kumar, who is currently on central deputation serving as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Special Protection Group (SPG). His experience at the central level is also a key factor in his candidacy.
But the senior-most among the three discussed names is Jitendra Kumar, who is currently posted as DG of the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP). After holding various senior-level positions in Bihar Police, he is currently serving as DG (Special Armed Police).
What is interesting is all three officers have distinct profiles. Kundan Krishnan is known for his administrative and operational experience in the Bihar Police, Amit Kumar has experience on central deputation, and Jitendra Kumar is a senior officer of the 1993 batch who has held senior positions in Bihar. Therefore, several factors are expected to be considered in the selection process.
The clear picture will emerge only after the names are considered at the government level and the prescribed process is followed. So, the list of potential candidates may change in the coming months.
But, currently, the names of Kundan Krishnan, Jitendra Kumar, and Amit Kumar are the most discussed.
