Bengaluru: Senior Karnataka cadre IPS officer B Dayananda (IPS:1994:KN) has been promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) and appointed as Director General of Police, Internal Security Division (ISD), by the Karnataka government.
According to a notification issued by the Karnataka Government on Monday (September 7, 2026), Dayananda, who was serving as Additional Director General of Police, Training, has been promoted to the DGP grade carrying Level-16 pay with retrospective effect from September 12, 2025. He has been posted as DGP, Internal Security Division, against a vacant post, with immediate effect.
The government has also declared the post of DGP, Internal Security Division, equivalent in status and responsibilities to the cadre post of Director General of Police-Criminal Investigation Department (DGP-CID) under the IPS (Pay) Rules, 2016.
Dayananda was serving as Bengaluru City Police Commissioner when the stampede occurred at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, 2025, during celebrations following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory. He was subsequently suspended and faced a departmental inquiry along with other police officers in connection with the incident.
The Karnataka government revoked his suspension on July 28, 2025, and reinstated him into service. The departmental proceedings against him were subsequently closed, clearing the way for his latest elevation.
With the latest notification, Dayananda has been promoted to the DGP grade with retrospective effect from September 12, 2025, and appointed as DGP, Internal Security Division.
