Senior IPS officer Rajiv Ranjan Bhagat (IPS:1998:GJ) has been appointed as Additional Director General (ADG) in the Special Protection Group (SPG).

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Monday (June 1, 2026), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Office of Secretary (Security), Cabinet Secretariat for his appointment to the post from the date of assumption of charge.

The appointment has been made by temporarily upgrading the post presently held by the officer to the level of Additional Director General as a measure personal to the officer.

Bhagat is currently serving in the SPG as Inspector General.

Notably, he had first joined Central deputation in the SPG on May 20, 2018 as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for a period of five years. His original deputation tenure was scheduled to end in May 2023. However, he continued in the organisation after being granted multiple extensions.

Most recently, in April 2025, the Centre extended his deputation tenure by two years till May 20, 2027.

The latest appointment comes months after Bhagat was empanelled in March 2026 for holding Additional Director General-level posts in the Government of India.

With the elevation, Bhagat will continue in the Special Protection Group in a higher capacity as part of the central security establishment.
