Retired IAS officer Upma Chawdhry appointed Chairperson of Metropolitan Stock Exchange

Retired IAS officer Upma Chawdhry has been appointed Chairperson of Metropolitan Stock Exchange, becoming the first woman to head a market infrastructure institution.

Former IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre Upma Chawdhry (IAS:1983:HP) has been appointed Chairperson of the Metropolitan Stock Exchange (MSE).

Her appointment as Chairperson of the Governing Board of MSE has been approved by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). With this appointment, Chawdhry becomes the first woman to head a Market Infrastructure Institution (MII) in India.

Chawdhry had a distinguished administrative career spanning more than 35 years in the Indian Administrative Service. She retired from service in December 2020. In 2016, she became the first woman Director of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, the country’s premier civil services training institution.

During her career, she held several key positions and gained extensive experience in areas such as finance, rural development, education, industry, tourism, women’s empowerment and public sector reforms.

Chawdhry has also represented India at various international forums, including the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and worked closely with several United Nations agencies. Between 2018 and 2021, she served as a Member of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Public Administration and chaired the working group for the United Nations Public Service Award.

She has additionally served on the boards of several reputed institutions and companies, contributing to governance reforms and organisational development.
