The Election Commission of India on Thursday (April 2, 2026) appointed Sandeep Rai Rathore (IPS:1992:TN) as Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu. He replaces G Venkataraman (IPS:1994:TN), who was serving as in-charge DGP and Head of Police Force.
The Commission also said that the transferred officer will not be given any election duty till the poll process is over.
Sandeep Rai Rathore is the third senior-most DGP in the state. Seema Agrawal and Rajeev Kumar, both from the 1992 batch, are senior to him.
Rathore was earlier in the panel of three officers cleared by UPSC in September 2025 for the state’s DGP post. The state had not selected any name from that panel. This had led to contempt cases in the Supreme Court.
The Election Commission also made other postings. Sanjay Kumar (IPS:1997:TN) has been appointed Commissioner of Police, Tambaram. He replaces A Amalraj (IPS:1996:TN). Abhishek Dixit (IPS:2006:TN) has been posted as Commissioner of Police, Madurai. RV Ramya Bharti (IPS:2008:TN) has been posted as Inspector General of Police, West Zone.
Earlier on Friday, the Commission had transferred four IPS officers in the state. G Jawahar (IPS:2016:TN) has been posted as SP, Kancheepuram. K Prabakar (IPS) has been given charge of SP, Perambalur. E Sundaravathanam (IPS:2016:TN) has been posted as SP, Thanjavur. GSA Myilvaganan (IPS:2016:TN) has been posted as SP, Tenkasi.
Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
