The Supreme Court on Friday (November 7, 2025) sought a response from the Tamil Nadu government on a contempt plea alleging non-compliance with its earlier orders regarding the appointment of a regular Director General of Police (DGP) in the state.
A bench headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran issued notice to the state government, directing it to file its reply within three weeks. The plea, filed by petitioner Kishore Krishnaswamy and argued by advocate Prashant Bhushan, accused the Tamil Nadu government of deliberately withholding the appointment of a DGP from the panel of three IPS officers recommended by the UPSC.
Bhushan told the court that despite the Supreme Court’s September 8 order directing the state to appoint a regular DGP from the UPSC panel, the government continues with an acting DGP. The petition contended that the appointment of an in-charge DGP, G Venkataraman, on August 31, 2025, violated the apex court’s directions in the Prakash Singh case, which held that the concept of an acting DGP is “foreign to law.”
It also alleged that the acting DGP was “handpicked” by the ruling dispensation to serve political interests ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
