The Supreme Court on Tuesday overturned Centre’s decision to divest CBI chief Alok Verma of his duties. The court reinstated Verma as CBI Director setting aside the Central Vigilance Commission’s (CVC) October 23 order.

However, the judgment authored by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and read out by Justice SK Kaul in the apex court, restrains Verma from taking any major policy decisions until such time his case is finally disposed off by the Selection Committee. The high powered committee will decide on the matter in a week.

The court in its judgement said that the government should have referred to the Select Committee consisting of the Chief Justice of India, Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition to initiate Alok Verma’s removal.
