Punjab is set to take the next step towards appointment of a regular Director General of Police (DGP) as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is scheduled to meet on June 30 to shortlist a panel of officers for the state’s top police post.
Notably, Punjab has been functioning under a caretaker DGP arrangement since July 2022 with Gaurav Yadav (IPS:1992:PB) holding charge.
According to the process, the UPSC is expected to recommend a panel of three officers after examining the list of eligible officers submitted by the Punjab government. The state government will make the final appointment from among the recommended names.
The development comes after the Punjab government earlier this year submitted a list of 14 eligible IPS officers to the Commission.
The process gathered pace after the Supreme Court in February expressed concern over states continuing with acting police chiefs instead of making regular appointments. Subsequently, UPSC sought details of eligible officers from Punjab to initiate the selection process.
The Punjab government forwarded the names of 14 senior IPS officers to UPSC on April 6. The list includes incumbent caretaker DGP Gaurav Yadav.
Among the 1992 batch officers in the list are Dr Sharad Satya Chauhan, Harpreet Singh Sidhu, Gaurav Yadav and Kuldeep Singh.
The proposal also includes Gurpreet Kaur Deo, Jitendra Kumar Jain and Shashi Prabha Dwivedi from the 1993 batch.
From the 1994 batch, the names include Anita Punj, Naresh Kumar, Ram Singh, Sudhanshu Shekhar Srivastava, Praveen Kumar Sinha, Amardeep Singh Rai and Neeraja Voruvuru.
According to information available, Dr Sharad Satya Chauhan, Harpreet Singh Sidhu and Gaurav Yadav are among the leading contenders for inclusion in the final panel.
