Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Durga Shanker Mishra (IAS:1984:UP) tenure is set to expire on 31 December 2022. Power corridors in Delhi and Lucknow are buzzing with speculation about whether or not he will get an extension. But, according to our sources, there are chances that the incumbent Chief Secretary may get an extension.

It is important to bear in mind that on 29 December 2021, just two days before his retirement from the service, he was repatriated from central deputation to his parent cadre Uttar Pradesh as the Yogi Adityanath-led government proposed him as the new Chief Secretary of the State. At that time, he was serving as Secretary of Housing and Urban Affairs in the Government of India.

It was his relationship with PM Narendra Modi and his upright and hardworking image that led him to the post of Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh. Now, he has worked for almost a year with CM Yogi Adityanath and performed exceptionally well. His performance as Chief Secretary has made him one of CM Yogi Aditynath’s most trusted bureaucrats.

Since he has the confidence of both the central and state governments, he is likely to get an extension as Chief Secretary, provided the Modi government does not throw unexpected surprises at the last minute as it has in many cases in the past.
