In a significant development, senior Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer Jayashree Muralidharan (IAS:2002:TN) is all set to bid goodbye to her decades-old bureaucratic career, months before her scheduled retirement. According to sources, she had applied for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) on January 30 and is likely to be relieved from the elite service on April 30.
Jayashree is currently posted as the Principal Secretary to the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department.
With her retirement originally due in January 2027, Jayashree had about nine months of service left. As per reliable sources, she is expected to take up a role in the private sector, reportedly with the TVS Group, after retirement.
Jayashree shot into prominence after her close association with former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha as one of her most trusted officers. During Jayalalitha’s tenure, Jayashree served as Additional Secretary to the CM.
During her long administrative career, she held several key positions, including Secretary for the Differently Abled Welfare Department, Managing Director of TIDCO, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, and Joint Chief Electoral Officer.
As a top official in charge of the Social Welfare Department, Jayashree played a key role in the implementation of flagship welfare schemes, including the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai (KMUT) scheme.
Before it, she served as District Collector of Tiruchy, and it was during this period that she interacted closely with Jayalalitha, who represented Srirangam under the Tiruchy district.
