In an unexpected turn of events, the Supreme Court has directed the UPSC to defer its panel meeting for the selection of the Odisha DGP till August 18, when a petition challenging the DGP selection process will be considered by the top court.
Thus, the Empanelment Committee Meeting of the UPSC to finalise the candidates, slated to take place on Thursday, stands cancelled till the next date of hearing.
A PIL had been filed in the apex court alleging that the Odisha govt was trying to circumvent the Supreme Court’s directions in the Prakash Singh judgment on the DGP appointment by including an ineligible officer in the panel by granting promotion.
The issue had been mentioned before a bench headed by CJI Surya Kant by senior advocate P Chidambaram, who alleged that an officer was hurriedly given a promotion, preempting the Supreme Court hearing, and to include his name in the panel sent to the UPSC.
The top court, then, asked the counsel representing the UPSC to defer its Thursday meeting.
