New Delhi: Senior bureaucrat Saurabh Garg (Retd. IAS:1991:OR) has been given a one-year extension as Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on a contract basis.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Monday (July 13, 2026), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his tenure extension for one year beyond July 31, 2026, i.e. up to July 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
According to the order, Saurabh Garg will also continue to discharge the functions of Secretary to the National Statistics Commission.
Notably, Garg has been serving in both positions since June 2024. His appointment order issued on May 30, 2024 had provided for his appointment as MoSPI Secretary till his superannuation on July 31, 2024, followed by a one-year contractual tenure. He was also assigned the additional responsibility of Secretary to the National Statistics Commission.
Subsequently, on July 29, 2025, his tenure in both positions was extended till July 31, 2026. With the latest order, his tenure has now been extended for another one year, up to July 31, 2027.
Prior to his current assignment, Garg served as Secretary, Department of Social Justice & Empowerment.
