Renowned scientist Mangi Lal Jat has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for three years. According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Thursday (17.04.2025), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment Mr. Jat to the post for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Jat is currently serving as Deputy Director General (Research) & Director Global Research Programme at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad.
A committee of eminent scientists chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, which included two former ICAR Directors General, the Director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and other experts interviewed five shortlisted candidates on March 7. Based on the committee’s recommendation, the ACC approved Jat’s appointment and notification was issued on April 17.
