The IAS officers will now have to serve on central deputation for 2 years, in the first 16 years of their service. The government revised the empanelment policy for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers to this effect on Thursday.

As per the notification issued by the DoPT,”…Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has further directed that not less than two years’ experience at Deputy Secretary/Director level under the Central Staffing Scheme shall be mandatory for empanelment at Joint Secretary level at the Centre in respect of IAS officers from 2007 batch onwards.”

All IAS officers have to begin their career with the state government, and not the union government. This means the officers with the state government will qualify forempanelment, or in simpler terms be eligiblefor ‘promotion’ at Joint Secretary level at the Centre, if they serve at the Centre for two years in between those first 16 years.
