Former IAS officer Subhash Chandra Lal Das appointed DERC Chairperson

Former IAS officer Subhash Chandra Lal Das has been appointed Chairperson of DERC, with Ajay Kumar Jain and Praveen Gupta named as members.

New Delhi: Former IAS officer Subhash Chandra Lal Das (Retd. IAS:1992:AGMUT) has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), according to a notification issued on Wednesday (September 9, 2026).

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 45D of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2023 read with Section 84(1) of the Electricity Act, 2003, the President is pleased to appoint Subhash Chandra Lal Das (Retd.) IAS (AGMUT:1992) as the Chairperson of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission,” the notification issued by the Delhi government’s Power Department said.

Ajay Kumar Jain, a retired district judge, has been appointed as Member (Legal), while Praveen Gupta, Member (Thermal) of the Central Electricity Authority, has been appointed as Member (Non-Legal) of the DERC, according to separate notifications.

The post of DERC Chairperson had been vacant since July 2025, following the retirement of Justice (Retd.) Umesh Kumar.

Das will now head Delhi’s electricity regulatory body, which is responsible for regulating the power sector in the National Capital Territory.

In May, a committee was constituted by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu to select the DERC Chairperson and two members.
