In a significant development, the Chhattisgarh government on Monday (30.06.2025) granted a three-month extension to Chief Secretary Amitabh Jain (IAS:1987:CG) on the day he was scheduled to retire. The move has surprised many in the state’s power corridors, where expectations were high that a new Chief Secretary would be appointed.

According to sources, the decision on naming a successor had not been finalised, prompting the government to extend Jain’s tenure. In fact, on Monday morning, Jain visited Governor Ramen Deka, seemingly to bid farewell before demitting office. However, by afternoon, the situation shifted, and the extension order was issued.

Three senior IAS officers were being considered for the top post: Subrat Sahoo (IAS:1992:CG), Amit Agrawal (IAS:1993:CG), and Manoj Pingua (IAS:1994:CG).

Jain has been serving as Chief Secretary since 1 December 2020, after the retirement of then CS Rajendra Prasad Mandal (IAS:1987:CG) on 30 November 2020.
