The post of Chandigarh Home Secretary has been vacant since June 14, when Nitin Yadav (IAS:2000:HY) was relieved from his duties upon being appointed Joint Secretary in the Department of Finance. The UT Administration has already requested the Haryana government to send the names of three IAS officers to begin the process with the Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the Haryana government has yet to submit the panel of officers.
The Home Secretary position is the most significant post after the UT Adviser within the UT Administration. Aspirants often need to lobby intensively to secure this position. Names have already started circulating in the bureaucratic circles of Chandigarh and Delhi. According to our sources, IAS officers Amit Agrawal (IAS:2003:HY) and Mandip Singh Brar (IAS:2005:HY) are the leading candidates for the Home Secretary role. Amit Agrawal is currently serving as the additional principal secretary to the Chief Minister, while Mandip Singh Brar is the Director of the Information and Public Relations Department. Notably, Brar was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Union Territory in October 2018 on a three-year deputation.
Nitin Yadav assumed the role of Home Secretary in September 2021, with his three-year tenure set to expire in September 2024. However, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed Yadav as Joint Secretary in the Department of Finance on May 30, extending his combined tenure of central deputation up to September 12, 2028.
