The Central government on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) appointed Saibal Chattopadhyay, former Director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kolkata, as Chairperson of the National Statistical Commission (NSC).
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has also approved the appointment of Shubhabrata Das, Satyendra Bahadur Singh and Madhavan Mukund as Members of the Commission.
The National Statistical Commission consists of a part-time Chairperson, four part-time Members and the CEO, NITI Aayog as an ex-officio member. The Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), serves as Secretary to the Commission.
Saibal Chattopadhyay holds a PhD in Statistics and MS in Statistics from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, USA, besides an MSc in Statistics from Calcutta University.
Shubhabrata Das is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
Satyendra Bahadur Singh is a retired Indian Statistical Service officer of 1987 batch with more than three decades of experience.
Madhavan Mukund is serving as Director of Chennai Mathematical Institute.
The National Statistical Commission was set up in 2005 to serve as a nodal body for core statistical activities in the country and to evolve, monitor and enforce statistical priorities and standards.
