Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan (IAS:1987:TN) came out with issues affecting bureaucratic efficiency in the country at a recent performance review meeting. He reportedly presented a list of 12 problematic behaviours of bureaucrats affecting government productivity through cartoons.
He was reportedly annoyed with those bureaucrats who throw files, call meetings after 7 pm, turn up late after asking staff to work on Saturdays, or ask women colleagues to come uncomfortably close to show them a document.
Somanathan criticised late meetings and delays in decision-making by bureaucrats, while calling for faster consultations between ministries.
He also stressed the need for a better workplace that allows officials to work more efficiently.
Somanathan also briefed officials on the Centre’s next round of reforms, called Deregulation 3.0. The initiative, aimed at reducing red tape, simplifying compliance requirements and improving the ease of doing business, is planned for January.
The purpose of the meeting was to examine how government departments were performing against different parameters.
