New Delhi: The iconic Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan in Delhi are set to be demolished to make way for Kartavya Bhawan 4 and 5, as part of the government’s ongoing Central Vista redevelopment project.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has asked ministries and departments occupying the two buildings to vacate the premises and hand them over by September 30, 2026.
According to a CPWD communication dated September 16, the tender for construction of Kartavya Bhawan 4 and 5 has already been awarded. Since the proposed new buildings will come up on the existing sites of Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan, the premises need to be cleared before construction can begin.
The CPWD has asked the concerned ministries and departments to complete the shifting process on priority so that the sites can be handed over to the agency executing the project.
Several ministries already shifted
Several ministries and departments have already moved out of Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan and shifted to alternative office locations, including the newly developed Kartavya Bhawans. However, the relocation process is still underway, with some officials continuing to work from the two buildings.
Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan have served as important government office complexes for decades. Shastri Bhawan, named after former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, has housed several major ministries, while Krishi Bhawan has been associated with the Agriculture and Rural Development ministries, among others.
Part of larger Central Vista plan
The demolition of the two buildings is part of the government’s broader plan to create modern Common Central Secretariat complexes and bring ministries currently operating from different locations under new, integrated office buildings.
The government has planned 10 Kartavya Bhawans under the Central Vista redevelopment project. The new complexes are intended to provide modern and technology-enabled workplaces while replacing several older government office buildings in central Delhi.
With the tender for Kartavya Bhawan 4 and 5 already awarded and the vacation process underway, Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan are now moving towards the next phase of the Central Vista redevelopment project.
