Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was in his element while interacting with the 2024 batch of IAS officer trainees at the ‘Assistant Secretaries Programme’ on Wednesday. Birla called upon the newly-inducted bureaucrats to view the IAS not just as a profession but as a lifelong commitment to the Constitution and the country.
While speaking at the programme organized by the Lok Sabha Secretariat’s training arm PRIDE at Parliament House, Birla described civil servants as pivotal agents of change turning public aspirations into real-world outcomes. Birla emphasized that the ultimate success of any governance model hinges on how effectively policies are executed at the grassroots level.
During the interaction, Birla explained that while elected representatives voice public needs and enact laws in Parliament, it is the administrative machinery that gives these laws true value through efficient execution.
Birla had a piece of advice for the future administrators asking them to stay connected with the ground reality. The speaker also emphasized that effective governance requires empathy, sensitivity, and local understanding alongside technical knowledge of rules.
He noted that officers who communicate in local languages and directly address public grievances are much more successful in building trust.
Birla expressed happiness at the rising number of women joining the civil services, stating their participation strengthens national governance. Concluding his address, he urged the trainees to maintain the highest standards of integrity and transparency, focusing their careers on serving the most vulnerable sections of society
