In a key development, Bhupender Gupta has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Navratna CPSE. He assumed charge on September 4, 2025, at the Corporate Office in Faridabad, following approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Prior to this appointment, Gupta served as Director (Technical), THDC India Limited, and also holds the additional charge of CMD, SJVN Limited. His selection came after the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) recommended his name in June 2025.
An Electrical Engineer with an MBA in Operations Management, Gupta brings more than 34 years of professional experience, including 31 years in power CPSUs. He began his PSU career with SJVN in 1995, contributing to the commissioning of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydropower Project and working on Bhutan’s 1020 MW Tala Project.
Over the years, he played pivotal roles in REC Ltd., Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (Bhutan), and THDCIL, where he spearheaded the commissioning of major hydro and thermal projects, including the Tehri PSP and Khurja STPP.
With extensive expertise spanning hydro, thermal, renewable, transmission, and distribution, Gupta’s leadership is expected to bolster NHPC’s position in India’s power sector and accelerate its renewable energy growth.
