R Chandranathan appointed as DGP, Meghalaya

The Meghalaya government, on Tuesday, has appointed R Chandranathan (IPS:1986:AM) as the new Director General of Police instead of regularising the service of RP Agarwal, the acting DGP of Meghalaya and the senior most police officer. The state Home department notified Chandranathan, Special Director General of Police (Railways), Assam, as the full-fledged DGP of Meghalaya.

The UPSC had on October 1 cleared three names for the top job namely ; R P Agarwal(IPS:1986:AM), R Chandranathan (IPS:1986:AM) and A K Sinha Casshyap (IPS:1987:AM). Of three short-listed names Meghalaya Govt picked Chandranathan for the top job.

Chandranathan succeeded former DGP Swaraj Bir Singh who retired on July 31 this year.

Director General of Prisons RP Agarwal was asked to temporarily look after the office of the DGP after the retirement of the in-charge Director General of Home Guards and Civil Defence R Awasthi.
