The Supreme Court on Monday (17.03.2025) issued a notice to the central government, seeking its response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the appointment process of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

The petition, filed by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) against the Union of India, has brought the selection of the country’s top auditing authority under judicial scrutiny. It argues that the CAG, entrusted with auditing government expenditures to ensure accountability and transparency, should be appointed by an independent selection committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India.

The court has asked the government to file its response to the plea.
