Mired in controversy over the appointment of acting DGP, the Jharkhand government has sent a list of four senior IPS officers to the UPSC for short listing three names for appointment as DGP of the state. The officers, whose names have been included in the panel sent to the UPSC, are Anil Palta, and Anurag Gupta, 1990 batch IPS officers as well as Prashant Singh and RK Mallick of 1992 batch. Thus, the state is poised to have a regular DGP soon.
The development bears significance as the state government had earlier appointed Anurag Gupta as acting DGP, but Gupta’s appointment was challenged in the Supreme Court through a contempt petition. The petition was heard by a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India himself. The apex court had issued notices to the state government as well as Gupta in this regard. The top court is still hearing the case.
By sending the four names to the UPSC for consideration, the government has tried to evade legal implication and ensuing embarrassments.
