Former Indian foreign secretary Dr S Jaishankar will be taking over as the Tata Group’s president in global corporate affairs, Tata Sons announced on Monday.Company said in statement that “In his new role, he will be responsible for the Tata group’s global corporate affairs and international strategy development and Tata Sons’ international offices will report to him,”.
1977 batch Indian Foreign Service officer S Jaishankar was appointed Foreign Secretary in January 2015 and serves this post till January 2018. He held many key roles during his career including stints as high commissioner to Singapore, ambassador to China and the United States. He also played a key role in negotiating the Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement.A graduate of St Stephen’s College, Jaishankar is an MA in Political Science and an MPhil and PhD in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
For the Tata group, the appointment of Jaishankar will come as a shot in the arm as the group’s large portion of revenues now comes from abroad. The group has to negotiate with various governments to lobby for its interests.
