West Bengal: Rajeev Kumar reinstated as DGP

The West Bengal government on Monday (15.07.2024) reinstated senior IPS officer Rajeev Kumar (IPS:1989:WB) as the Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. He will replace Sanjoy Mukherjee (IPS:1989:WB), who was appointed DGP at the directions of the Election Commission of India during the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Kumar will continue to hold his current post of OSD in the rank of Additional Chief Secretary in the Information Technology and Electronics (IT & E ) Department. Sanjoy Mukherjee has been appointed as the new Director General of Fire and Emergency Services.

In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections on March 18, Vivek Sahay (IPS:1988:WB) was appointed DGP of State Police, replacing Rajeev Kumar. However, within a day, Sanjoy Mukherjee was designated as the new DGP.

Rajeev Kumar was appointed DGP of state in December 2023. He previously served as Kolkata Police Commissioner from February 2016 to February 2019, except for a brief period in April 2016 when he was removed by the Election Commission of India due to his proximity to the Chief Minister. The state government reinstated him in May 2016 after the assembly elections. Before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Kumar was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Bengal Police as Additional Director General.
