The central government on Monday extended the tenure of West Bengal Chief Secretary B P Gopalika (IAS:1989:WB) by another three months.
A communique from the Department of Personnel & Training, under the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, was sent to the state Secretariat Nabanna on Monday afternoon, informing the state about the approved extension.
Gopalika was supposed to retire on May 31. However, the state government requested an extension, citing that his retirement would occur before the seventh and final phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha polls on June 1 and the counting day on June 4. With the new extension, Gopalika will now retire on August 31.
Gopalika assumed the role of Chief Secretary on December 31, 2023, succeeding H K Dwivedi (IAS:1988:WB), whose extended term concluded on December 31, 2023.
