Vice Admiral Suraj Berry took over as Chief of Personnel of the Indian Navy on Sunday. He succeeded Vice Admiral Satish Kumar Namdeo Ghormade, who retired on Friday after 39 years in the Navy. Berry was commissioned on January 1, 1987, and is a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Warfare.
He commanded the missile vessel INS Nirbhik, missile corvette INS Karmuk, stealth frigate INS Talwar, and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, where he was the commissioning commanding officer.
Among his staff and operational appointments are those at the Mobile Missile Coastal Battery as Operations Officer, the Western Fleet as Fleet Gunnery Officer, the Indian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka and the Maldives as Defence Adviser, the Director of Staff Requirements, the Naval Assistant to the Chief of Naval Staff, and the Principal Director at Naval Headquarters responsible for Strategy, Concepts, and Transformation.
Berry was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (Meritorious Service Medal) in 2006 for services during the Tsunami Relief operations in Sri Lanka/ Maldives and the Nau Sena Medal (Navy Medal) in 2015 for devotion to duty.
