Veteran former bureaucrat Neeraj Kumar Gupta has joined NSE International Exchange as its Chairman cum Public Interest Director (PID). His appointment on the Governing Board of NSE IX was approved by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) with effect from 1st April 2025. Gupta succeeds Rajeev Mehrishi (Retd IAS: 1978: RJ) at NSE IX, which operates from the GIFT City in Ahmedabad — India’s emerging global financial hub.
A 1982 batch IAS officer of UP cadre, Gupta is known as a highly valued and accomplished bureaucrat. He retired from the post of Secretary in the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM) under the Union Finance Ministry in 2018. But the central government decided to utilize his extensive expertise as Central Information Commissioner (CIC); where he completed his tenure in 2023.
As DIPAM Secretary, Gupta was part of the core team that prepared three Union Budgets (2016, 2017, and 2018) for the Modi government at the Centre. He has also been the Chairman of the National Task Force for Promotion of Digital & Cashless Economy from March 2016 until retirement.
During his tenure as Secretary, DIPAM, Gupta directed the efficient management of Government investments in all Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) & Private Companies. He was instrumental in ensuring domestic and foreign investors’ access to Indian capital market and regulators like SEBI and RBI for rationalizing the policies for listing of companies and divestment of equity though various market instruments. Not only this, he played a crucial role in preparing the framework for mergers and consolidation, creation of equity and debt ETFs as well as the functioning of stock markets etc.
Gupta’s appointment as the Chairman and Public Interest Director promises outstanding value addition to the performance of NSE IX as his vast experience in Corporate Governance and Finance will immensely benefit NSE IX’s future development as well as the GIFT City Ecosystem.
