New Delhi: Varsha Ashok Aglawe has assumed charge as the 54th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), becoming the first woman to head the country’s premier geoscientific organisation in its 176-year history.
She succeeds Asit Saha, who served as Director General from July 27, 2024 to July 31, 2026.
A distinguished geoscientist with over three decades of experience, Aglawe joined the Geological Survey of India in 1992 after serving with the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM). Prior to assuming charge as Director General, she was serving as Additional Director General & Head of Department, Eastern Region, Kolkata.
During her career, she has held several important scientific and administrative assignments in GSI’s Central, Northern and Eastern Regions, besides serving at its Central Headquarters.
Established in 1851, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) is the country’s premier geoscientific organisation under the Ministry of Mines. It is responsible for geological mapping, mineral resource assessment, exploration of critical and strategic minerals, geoscientific studies, and providing scientific inputs for the sustainable development of the nation’s mineral resources.
