The Punjab government on Saturday (08.01.2022) appointed Senior IPS officer Viresh Kumar Bhawra (IPS:1987:PB) as the state’s new Director General of Police for a period of two years. Bhawra takes over from acting DGP Sidharth Chattopadhyaya (IPS:1986:PB).
The Punjab government order says, “On the consideration of the panel received from Union Public Service Commission, the Governor of Punjab is pleased to appoint Viresh Kumar Bhawra, IPS, as Director General of Police, Punjab (Head of Police Force). His term shall be for a minimum period of two years from the date of assumption of office in pursuance of the orders of the Supreme Court dated July 3, 2018.”
Earlier, the Union Public Service Commission had sent a panel of three names to the state government, including former DGP Dinkar Gupta (IPS:1987:PB), V K Bhawra (IPS:1987:PB) and Prabodh Kumar (IPS:1988:PB), for the top police post in the state.
