Uttar Pradesh is likely to see its third consecutive acting Director General of Police (DGP) as the acting top cop of the state RK Vishwakarma (IPS:1988:UP) is set to retire on Wednesday (31 May). The state government is yet to send a panel of IPS officers to the Centre for final selection.

Six IPS officers of 1987 and 1988 batches are being considered by the state government, with Vijaya Kumar and Anand Kumar, the two senior-most officers from the 1988 batch, expected to be appointed for the time being.

Mukul Goel (IPS:1987:UP) was the last regular DGP and he was removed from the post of DGP on May 11, 2022, following allegations of inaction and lack of interest in work. However, he was posted as DG Civil Defence. After Goel, two consecutive acting DGPs DS Chauhan (IPS:1987:UP) and R K Vishwakarma served the post for 11 months and two months respectively.
