Union government appoints Chief Justices of five High Courts

The Union government on Friday (26.05.2023) appointed Chief Justices to five High Courts: Bombay, Madras, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan. These appointments were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on 19th April 2023.

The Union government on Friday (26.05.2023) appointed Chief Justices to five High Courts: Bombay, Madras, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan. These appointments were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on 19th April 2023.

They are;

  1. Justice Ramesh Deokinandan Dhanuka has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. He is the second senior-most judge at the Bombay HC after Acting Chief Justice Sanjay V Gangpurwala.
  2. Justice Sanjay Vijaykumar Gangapurwala has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court succeeding Justice S Vaidyanathan, who was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of Madras on 25th May 2023.
  3. Justice Mamidanna Satya Ratna Sri Ramachandra Rao has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. He is a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and succeeds Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan who has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of Himachal HC.
  4. Justice Sarasa Vankatanarayana has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court. He is the senior-most puisne Judge Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
  5. Justice Augustine George Masih has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court. He is the senior-most puisne Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
