Following up on the budget announcement (2018-19), the government has decided to set up two Defence Industrial Corridors- in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Six nodes in UP- Agra, Aligarh, Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Kanpur and Lucknow, and five in Tamil Nadu–Chennai, Coimbatore, Hosur, Salem and Tiruchirappalli have been identified for this purpose.
The Ordinance Factory Board, Defence Public Sector Undertakings and private industries will invest nearly 3700 crores in UP Defence Corridors, and 3100 crores in Tamil Nadu corrodors.
These corridors will boost indigenous production of defence and aerospace items. It will reduce reliance on imports, and instead promote export of such items to other countries.
