Senior IAS officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey (IAS:1987:OR) has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a three-year term. He is currently serving as Finance Secretary and Revenue Secretary and will succeed Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure concludes on February 28.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Thursday (27.02.2025), the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved Pandey’s appointment for three years from the date he assumes charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

LegendOfficers.com was the first to report that Tuhin Kanta Pandey was among the key contenders for the role. On February 26, the website identified five candidates in the race: apart from Pandey, the other contenders were Ajay Seth (IAS: 1987: KN), Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs; Pankaj Jain (IAS: 1987: AM), Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; Ashwani Bhatia, Whole-Time Member, SEBI; and Anand Mohan Bajaj (IA&AS: 1990), Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General (Former SEBI Member). The report also highlighted Pandey, Seth, and Jain as the frontrunners.

Tuhin Kanta Pandey has held several key positions as Secretary, including additional charges. He served as Secretary, DIPAM, and also held the additional charge of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) for several months. Following Dr. T. V. Somanathan’s appointment as Union Cabinet Secretary, Pandey was designated as Finance Secretary in September 2024. Under an ad hoc arrangement, he also served as Secretary, DoPT, in place of Dr. Vivek Joshi.

In January 2025, just ahead of the Union Budget, the Modi government appointed him as Revenue Secretary.
