New Delhi, May 20, 2025: In a key move, the Central Government on Tuesday extended the tenure of Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka (IPS:1988:HP) by one year. An official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, stated that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension beyond June 30, 2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The extension has been granted by relaxing provisions under Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has been heading the Intelligence Bureau since July 2022. Initially appointed for a two-year term, his continuation in the post required an extension in service as he was due to retire on June 30, 2023. That first extension, granted under the same service rules, allowed him to remain in office until June 30, 2025.
With the latest order, Deka’s tenure will now continue until June 30, 2026, marking his second consecutive one-year extension as IB chief.
