The Tamil Nadu government has sought a six month extension for senior IAS officer and state chief secretary K Shanmugam (IAS:1985:TN), who is set to retire on January 31. This is being seen as State Government’s bid to secure top bureaucratic postings in an election scenario in the state, due early next year.
In the past Shanmugam was given two extensions as Tamilnadu’s Chief Secretary citing his key role in Covid-19 management. According to sources in Tamil Nadu government, the state government earlier sought one year extension for K Shanmugam and the Centre granted only three months extension. Later in another request, the state government once again sought to extend the term of state chief secretary by another year, which the Union government overlooked and granted just a three month extension. Now in its third letter the state government has sought a six months extension for the senior state administrator and the results are being eagerly awaited in the power corridors of Chennai and New Delhi.
