Six senior Indian Police Service officers have been promoted to the rank of Director General of Police in Tamil Nadu. With these promotions, the State has 11 DGP-level officers.
The 1986 batch IPS officers — M.S. Jaffar Sait, Srilakshmi Prasad, Ashutosh Shukla, Mithilesh Kumar Jha, N. Tamilselvan and Ashish Bhengra — are all ADGPs in different departments. They have completed 32 years of service and have been awaiting promotion for more than a year.
The officers had appealed to the Centre and State governments for promotion since their batchmates in other States were promoted as DGP.
Last week, the State government issued orders stating that the officers were fit for promotions and communicated it to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
On Saturday, Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi issued an order promoting the officers. They, however, would continue to hold same posts.
The State already has five DGPs, with T.K. Rajendran as head of the police force. K.P. Maghendhran (1984 batch) is DGP/Director of Fire and Rescue Services; Sangaram Jangid (1985) is DGP/ Chief Vigilance Officer, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, J.K. Tripathy is DGP/Chairman, TNSURB, and C.K. Gandhirajan (1985) is DGP, State Human Rights Commission.
