The Union government on Tuesday (16.07.2024) notified the appointment of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan as Judges of the Supreme Court.
Justice N Kotiswar Singh’s elevation marks a historic moment as he becomes the first judge from Manipur to be appointed to the apex court, more than 70 years after India gained Independence. With these appointments, the Supreme Court has reached its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the elevation of these two judges on July 11, considering factors such as seniority, merit and judicial integrity. With these two appointments, the Supreme Court has its sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
