In a significant diplomatic development, Sudhakar Dalela (IFS:1993) has been appointed as the next Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Tuesday (July 29, 2025). He will take over the role from Dammu Ravi (IFS:1989), who is set to retire on August 31, 2025.

Dalela is currently serving as Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan.

Before his assignment in Bhutan, Dalela served in senior roles at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, and as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C. He has also held pivotal positions in the MEA headquarters in New Delhi, including in the Prime Minister’s Office, and has contributed to India’s engagement with global multilateral forums such as the WTO, UNCTAD, and G20.
