Speculation grows over Delhi LG’s future, Rajiv Gauba seen as frontrunner

If sources are to be believed, discussion revolves around two important names. Based on their proven track record of service delivery as well as their rapport with the central leadership, Rajiv Gauba (IAS:1982:JH), former Union Home Secretary and the longest-serving Cabinet Secretary, tops the list of probable candidates for the Delhi LG's post.

The BJP’s thumping victory in the Delhi Assembly elections has changed the political and administrative landscape of the national capital, giving rise to speculation over the continuance of V K Saxena as Delhi LG. It is being widely believed that Saxena has fulfilled his role, and hence, his continuance in that position appears sounds untenable in the changed scenario.

The Delhi LG has delivered what was expected from him by his political masters. But that chapter is closed now as the double-engine government is going to be installed in Delhi, which leaves no scope for a confrontationist LG in Delhi. So, it is being speculated that Saxena may no longer continue as Delhi LG.

In this situation, the Centre may opt for a new incumbent who has hands-on experience in running the government and the administration. Saxena came from a different background, being Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) Chairman before being appointed as Delhi LG.

Now, a seasoned administrator with a deep understanding of bureaucratic functioning is better suited for the job, as the role of bureaucracy is going to be predominant and the coordination between the different organs of the government will be crucial.

If this thinking is allowed to have its way, the next big question is: who may replace Saxena?

If sources are to be believed, discussion revolves around two important names. Based on their proven track record of service delivery as well as their rapport with the central leadership, Rajiv Gauba (IAS:1982:JH), former Union Home Secretary and the longest-serving Cabinet Secretary, tops the list of probable candidates for the Delhi LG’s post. He fulfills the two most required qualifications of being close to top ruling brass and being a veteran administrator.

Another name on the list is Naresh Kumar (IAS:1987:AGMUT). He had been at loggerheads with the AAP government till the time he served as Delhi Chief Secretary. The AAP government even unsuccessfully went to court to get his six-month extension as CS stopped. He, too, is in the reckoning and may be rewarded with the coveted job.

It will be really interesting to watch if the government appoints a new Delhi LG or waits for Saxena’s tenure to be over.
