In a surprising move ahead of Union Budget 2025, the central government has reassigned Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey (IAS:1987:OR) to also handle the responsibilities of Revenue Secretary, replacing Arunish Chawla (IAS:1992:BH), who has been moved to the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).
This reshuffle has raised eyebrows in power corridors, as Arunish Chawla had assumed the role of Revenue Secretary only 15 days earlier, on December 25. No official reason was provided for the sudden change, leaving room for speculation.
Sources within official circles suggest that the Revenue Department, being a critical portfolio ahead of the Budget, demands close monitoring. Additionally, Chawla’s dual responsibilities as Culture Secretary, with a heavy workload related to the Republic Day and the upcoming Maha Kumbh, may have influenced the decision.
As Finance Secretary, Pandey has been actively coordinating the Budget exercise, working closely with the departments of revenue, expenditure, economic affairs, and financial services under the Finance Ministry which might led to the assigning him charge of Revenue Secretary.
