Reports suggest that RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das is likely to get a tenure extension for at least another year. If this happens, he will become the longest-serving Chief of India’s Central Bank since Benegal Rama Rau, who held the position for 7.5 years from 1949 to 1957.
Reports indicate that no other candidates are being considered, and no selection committee has been formed. The official announcement is expected after the Maharashtra state elections.
Das was first appointed as RBI Governor for a three-year term on December 11, 2018, following the sudden resignation of Urjit Patel. His tenure was extended by another three years in October 2021 and is scheduled to end on December 10, 2024.
Prior to the appointment in RBI, he was serving as Member, 15th Finance Commission, and as India’s G20 Sherpa.
