There is a saying that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This is what was on public display when the YSR Congress Party was in power in Andhra Pradesh before the TDP took over. Several IAS officers wielded unbridled power, often indulging in activities totally unbecoming of senior bureaucrats. But you can’t hide your misdeed for long. Their misconduct is now surfacing and these officers are now being held accountable for their actions. The change of political dispensation has swung the pendulum of power in the state.
Two senior IAS officers, blinded by absolute power, took possession of two high-priced luxuries BMW cars seized from smugglers, and used them for personal purpose to show off their rising status. One officer sent a seized BMW car to Hyderabad for his wife to use for an extended period while another was allegedly used by a senior official in the forest department.
The matter came to light after the TDP government took over in June. It was Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, who ordered a probe into it.
Following the widespread media coverage of the incident, the IAS officers hurriedly returned these cars to the forest department. Thankfully, these cars are now back in official custody. But intriguingly, no action has been initiated against the two erring senior bureaucrats who are holding high positions in the present regime too. (BY-Dinesh Kumar)
