The Supreme Court collegium reaffirmed its recommendation on Wednesday to transfer Acting Chief Justice MV Muralidaran of the Manipur High Court to the Calcutta High Court in pursuit of improved judicial administration. This recommendation was made despite Justice Muralidaran’s request to either return to his original posting at the Madras High Court or not be transferred at all.

On March 27, a bench presided by Justice MV Muralidharan had issued an order instructing the Manipur government to consider a representation submitted by a Meitei organization seeking Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. This representation was believed to be a significant factor contributing to ongoing ethnic tensions in the state, with Meiteis residing in the valley on one side and Kuki and other tribal communities inhabiting the hills on the other.

Justice MV Muralidharan had directed the state government to evaluate the ST status request for the majority Meitei community and communicate the decision to the Central government within a four-week timeframe.

This resolution was initially passed on Monday, October 9, 2023, and was subsequently disclosed by the Supreme Court on October 11.
