The Supreme Court Collegium on Friday (19.01.2024) recommended the appointment of Justice Prasanna B Varale, currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The recommendation comes in response to the retirement of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul in December 2023, which reduced the judicial strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 33. The Collegium highlighted the significant increase in the workload of judges, emphasizing the need to maintain a full working judge-strength at all times. Following careful deliberations, the Collegium determined that Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale is a deserving and suitable candidate for the appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
