SC Collegium recommends Justice Abhay Ahuja for appointment as Permanent Judge of Bombay HC

The Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday (04.01.2024) recommended the appointment of Justice Abhay Ahuja, presently serving as an Additional Judge, as the Permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court. This follows the unanimous recommendation by the Collegium of the High Court of Bombay on September 4, 2023, endorsing Justice Abhay Ahuja for the Permanent Judge position.

In adherence to the Memorandum of Procedure, Supreme Court Judges familiar with the workings of the High Court of Bombay were consulted to assess Justice Abhay Ahuja’s fitness and suitability for the Permanent Judge role. The Committee of two Judges from the Supreme Court, as constituted by the Chief Justice of India in accordance with the October 26, 2017, Collegium resolution, thoroughly evaluated Justice Abhay Ahuja’s judgments, reporting that they meet the required standards.

Having scrutinized the material on record, including the opinions of consultee colleagues, the Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and Justice B R Gavai, is of the considered view that Justice Abhay Ahuja is fit and suitable for appointment as the Permanent Judge of the High Court of Bombay. In light of this, the Collegium resolves to recommend the appointment of Justice Abhay Ahuja, currently serving as an Additional Judge, as the Permanent Judge of the High Court of Bombay.
