The Supreme Court Collegium on Wednesday recalled its recommendation to appoint Justice S Muralidhar as Madras High Court Chief Justice. In its resolution published on April 19, the Collegium noted that Justice Muralidhar has less than four months to retire from his position. He was recommended by the Collegium as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in September 2022, but the government has not yet approved his recommendation.

The Collegium resolution stated “In view of this delay, the resolution recommending the transfer of Dr Justice S Muralidhar was recalled to facilitate the appointment of Justice SV Gangapurwala as permanent Chief Justice of the Madras High Court,.”

In October last year, the Centre cleared the other Supreme Court recommendations but chose to stall on the Collegium’s recommendations of transferring Justice S Muralidhar to the Madras high court as its chief justice from Odisha High Court.
